Bayern Munich has decided to pull out from their proposed football academy which was to be set up in the district of Burdwan in West Bengal.
The decision of setting up a football academy was announced by the Chairman of the Club and soccer legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on 12th November 2008 in Kolkata after the successful execution of a match between Bayern Munich and Mohun Bagan at the Salt Lake Stadium. The match was witnessed by almost 1,30,000 people which clearly signifies the craze of football in India. The match and the subsequent decision of setting up a football academy created a new direction in Indian football. The proposed academy could play an instrumental role in producing football talents who can represent India at the international level in future. Now, the dream is over. This is indeed a sad moment for Indian football. This is the high time for us to realize that a long term association with these football institutions is extremely important for the overall development of football in India. A single match may create a hype in short run, but it cannot ensure the development in long run.
